Guard your heart (1)
The scripture says in proverbs 4:23 “keep thy heart with all diligence: for out of it are the issues of life”. In other words the forces that govern our lives reside within us- our heart, so in this series, we shall take a look at the different channels to a man’s heart and how we can engineer our lives through them. We shall consider just three of them; the eye, the ear and the mouth.
Let’s expand them in that order, so I start with the EYE. Physics argues that the eye is essentially like a camera – it snaps images from the outside, processes it through the lens of the mind and registers it in the film or memory card of our spirit, the hardcopy to be printed out sooner or later. One good example of how this works is fornication, in Matthew 5:28-29 Jesus said “But I say unto you, that whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart”. Jesus was invariably saying that fornication or adultery starts from the eyes, goes through the mind, registers on the heart (spirit) and finally the deed is done. Jacob understood very well this principle. He understood that we soon become the very things we behold and so the scripture tells us in Genesis 30:37-39 of how he engineered the offsprings of animals by simply putting a “picture” in front of them.
Coca-Cola is rated the world’s number 1 company and the reason is not farfetched – no other company spends as much money on visual adverts as Coca-Cola. Somehow they have proven that “if they see us often, they will drink us often”. In fact, anybody who knows anything about advertisement knows that first, an advert must appeal to the eye. This is why we will never stop having scantily dressed ladies on our TV screens.
If we must guard our heart, we must secure the gate of our eyes. Isn’t that why God gave us eyelids? So that we can shut our eyes against some things. Job said “I made a solemn pact with myself never to undress a girl with my eyes. (Job 31:1)The Message Bible.
We mustn’t be like Solomon who was careless with his eyes gate- Ecclesiastes 2:10 and as a result derailed from the path of righteousness for a while. Instead, we should be deliberate about the things we expose the gate of our eyes to. Expose it to only the things you would love reproduced in your life. Watch the people you see, the pictures you view, the books you read and movies you watch! Remember the eye is a camera.
