What about it?
Invented in ancient China sometime before the 2nd century. And since then, it has proven useful in a range of human endeavours. From mining, to building, to travelling, to military and to astronomy. One central use of the compass common to all these sectors of life is navigation. Every compass has in it a magnetic needle that points to the north and south poles with respect to magnetic field of the earth.
What has that got to do with us?
It is important to know that inside every man is a God-given compass. The human spirit.
“ The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly”. – Proverbs 20:27
Just as the compass is useful in almost all fields of life. Our compass (our spirit) is a useful tool in navigating our lives. Compass is needed when making choices either little or big ones. With adequate knowledge of how to use a compass, even a small child will find his/her way through the thickest jungle. The question now is how do we use our compass?
How to use the compass
The first thing is to be sure the compass is working well. What do I mean by that? Just as the compass bears witness with the earth’s magnetic field. Our spirit as Romans 8:16 tells us should bear witness with the Spirit of God. So then, do all human spirits bear witness with the spirit of God? The answer is NO. Romans 8: 14 tells us that this privilege is reserved only the sons of God (born again Christians).
We can say that every man yet to be born-again has a non-functional compass. This non-functional compass directions cannot be trusted. This of course can be corrected. All you needs do is believe and confess the Lord Jesus and the compass is back in shape.
Having done this, it is worthy to note that more often than not, the compass is used in conjunction with a map. The map shows the location of objects and places. That is exactly what the word God is to a believer, a MAP.
“How can a young person live a clean LIFE? By carefully reading the map of your Word”-Psalms 119:9 (MSG)
A close look at the word reveals clearly where you are in God’s plans and purposes. Where you are heading and even give details of what and what to expect as you journey through. But then, it is by your spirit that you navigate your way from where you stand to where you are going. So then, the more of God’s word we take in, the easier it is for us to find our way in the issues of life.
And yet another thing we must do is to pray, especially in the spirit (praying in tongues).
“Likewise the spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groaning which cannot be uttered; and he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God” – Romans 8:26-27
Even as I have discovered in my own personal prayer life. Every time we pray in the spirit especially over some unclear issues. It is like exercising the compass to find a particular direction. Sometimes, it takes a day, two or even more. But you soon will discover that your spirit seems to be getting information about what exactly should be done. What is happening is that the spirit as is downloading the mind of God into our spirit. 1 Corinthians 2: 10
Now, as you put these things to use. And constantly rely on your spirit in making decisions of life. You are exercising your compass. You will soon discover that every time, you can almost readily say that this and this is exactly what God is.
“…even those who by reason of use have their senses exercise to discern both good and evil” – Hebrews 5:14
On a last note thus, I like to implore you; learn to follow your COMPASS.
